Privacy Policy

ThumbSpy helps users inspect public YouTube thumbnails, download publicly available thumbnail images, and optionally research public channel video lists with a user-supplied YouTube Data API key.

Information stored on your device

ThumbSpy stores video inputs, channel inputs, mode, sort and count preferences, last scanned thumbnail results, and download job status in Chrome extension storage.

If you select "Remember this key on this device," your YouTube Data API key is also stored in Chrome extension storage. If you leave that option off, the key is used for the current popup session and is not saved by ThumbSpy.

Direct thumbnail mode

In Page Scan and URL Lookup, ThumbSpy parses YouTube video IDs from the page or links you provide. If you click Scan current page, ThumbSpy injects a page watcher into the active YouTube tab to read visible video links and thumbnail elements as they appear. It builds known YouTube thumbnail image URLs and does not use a YouTube Data API key.

In Research, ThumbSpy uses the YouTube Data API key you provide to resolve public channels and public videos, then displays thumbnail candidates for those public videos.

Research mode

In Research mode, requests go directly from your browser to Google's YouTube Data API with the key you provide. ThumbSpy does not operate a server for these requests and does not receive your key.

YouTube data

ThumbSpy displays public YouTube thumbnail images and, in Research mode, public channel and video metadata returned by the YouTube Data API. The current-page watcher reads only the active YouTube page after a user command. It does not request access to a user's private YouTube account. Downloaded images are saved through Chrome's downloads system.

Sharing and sale

ThumbSpy does not sell personal information. Data is shared only with services needed for the feature you use, including YouTube image hosts and Google's YouTube Data API, or when required by law.

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Retention and deletion

Locally stored settings and saved scan results can be removed by clearing the extension's data in Chrome or uninstalling ThumbSpy. This does not delete data from YouTube or Google Cloud projects controlled by a user.

Third-party terms

Use of YouTube data is also subject to the YouTube Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy.
